- What terminals need to be upgraded and by when?
- All 5.2 specification terminals must be upgraded by 1 June 2014. Whilst this date seems a long way off, if your terminal contract is up for renewal or you require a new terminal, it is important that you sign/resign with a 6.0 specification terminal now.
All 5.1 (and below) specification terminals had an upgrade deadline of 1st June 2011 and as such are no longer able to accept electronic transactions. If you have a 5.1 (or below) specification terminal, please contact your EFTPOS terminal provider immediately to arrange an upgrade (their details should be located on a sticker on your terminal). - Why do these terminals need to be upgraded?
- Technology consistently evolves to make machines smarter and safer. Your EFTPOS terminal also needs to be upgraded to keep up with advancements in payments technology. Upgrading will ensure that you have up-to-date technology, get the latest security and software enhancements and can accept any type of card from anywhere in the world. In other words, it will simplify and safeguard the payment process for both your business and your customers.
- How can I find out what version my terminal is?
- Have a look at the top of an EFTPOS receipt produced by your terminal. Type your terminal ID number into the Are You Ready box to the right. You will be told which terminal version you are operating and receive advice as to what to do next.
- I don't accept credit cards so why do I have to upgrade?
- Security standards apply to all transaction processing - not just to credit cards.
- I have a 5.1 specification terminal, which has been disconnected, what do I need to do?
- Contact your EFTPOS terminal provider to arrange an upgrade. You should find your EFTPOS terminal provider's details on a sticker on your EFTPOS terminal, or you can visit the Paymark website to see a list of terminal providers.
- I don't know who my EFTPOS provider is, can you help me?
- Have a look for a sticker on your terminal showing the name of your provider and their phone number. If not, your rental contract should show the provider's name.
- I own my terminal, what should I do?
- If you purchased your terminal from an EFTPOS provider then contact them to discuss your upgrade options. If you purchased your EFTPOS terminal by other means, you can find a list of Paymark Partners that can assist you with upgrade options.
- How much will it cost me to upgrade?
- You will need to discuss this with your EFTPOS provider.
- Why do we have to upgrade so often?
- Upgrades are required to get the latest security and software enhancements. Upgrading will ensure that you have up-to-date technology and can accept any type of card from anywhere in the world.
- If I upgrade to a version 6.0 terminal now, when will I have to do it again?
- Version 6.0 is the latest version; however terminals have an approximate life cycle of 36 months. Your terminal is like your computer - it requires upgrades to get the latest security and software enhancements.
- What benefits will an upgrade give me?
- With banks issuing new, more secure chip cards, your EFTPOS technology needs to be up-to-speed so that it can process the variety of cards presented at point of purchase. Version 6.0 also provides:
- PIN Bypass - This facility provides an option to bypass PIN entry and enable the card and terminal to process a transaction using the cardholder's signature as verification. It is provided to cater for a situation where the cardholder cannot remember their PIN or may temporarily not be able to enter the PIN.
- Message Encryption - Renders full message encryption prior to the transaction leaving the terminal.
- Electronic Offline Vouchers (EOV) - EOV enables your business to continue processing transactions even if you lose connectivity to your EFTPOS terminal, making zip zap vouchers a thing of the past! Historically, only available on integrated solutions, EOV is a feature on all 6.0 terminals.
